Darinka Arones (she/her) (born 2002, Lima, Peru) is an interdisciplinary artist based in New York City. She is pursuing a BFA in Film and TV with a minor in Studio Art at New York University. As an Andean immigrant, Arones is interested in showcasing portrayals of the emotional psychology process of migrating and adapting. In her art, she uses saturated colors to highlight the intensity of her homesickness, grief, and melancholy sentiments. Arones explores issues about displacement and immigrant hope by capturing reality in her NJ/ NY Latinx neighborhoods. She aims to understand the duality of experiences that accompany an immigrant from different ethnicities and socioeconomic statuses. Arones’ Quechua background has motivated her to investigate the collectivity, perspective, and existence of her Andean identity in Western culture. She approaches observational documentary practices and painting techniques to achieve distinct visual narratives. Arones uses her background in interdisciplinary art to add poetic and creative approaches to film productions.

It was not an instant talent but daily practice and excitement for the design process motivated her to not stop creating––holding a brush as she would her soul meant pouring her heart out. Moreover, the blending of colors not only drew satisfaction to Arones but emotional authenticity as well. She believes that art is one of the most representative forms by which an individual can express love, such as the love for her Peruvian identity. Therefore, Arones aims to represent her community by advocating through artistic filmmaking practices.
